Before new friends begin on this journey
called Light ‘Em Up, I thought it would be fair to tell you the story.
I started it last year for a few reasons.
I am crazy about the hearts of my kids – and I didn’t like this theme in my home “what are we getting?”
You can read my soapbox blog post from last year here. I even booted that little cute Elf! Wha?
I knew I wanted something to capture the pure magic and fun of the season for those little angels, but pointed them to others and the greatest gift of the season. Hint: He was born on Christmas Day.
I wanted a way for my kids to live our faith and serve others at a very young age – even when many folks and ministries said, “No, they are too young.”
I wanted to give something FREE to you! MANY of you supported me all year with the launch of ABC Scripture Cards and this site.
What I didn’t know…
You would LOVE, LOVE it and would take it to heart and go bigger and further then I dreamed.
Well, I should say God did.
Within a few days thousands of people came to the site for the family plan, 50 Ideas and Gift Tags.
Even materials that this non-graphic-designer whipped up in Word. Yikes.
Stories Came Pouring In Like These:
One mom paid for the Starbucks behind her and it kept going 20 cars.
One family went into Kmart and bought Christmas for an entire family.
My girls thanked tired mall employees working the final days before Christmas. We saw big, stone security guards LIGHT UP with grins, makeup artists get teary, elderly Macy’s employees squeeze them and say,
“NO ONE has ever thanked us.”
I saw even the toughest mail carrier light up with a grin and garbage collectors giggle.
I saw one dad with his boys color posters and head to the airport to welcome soldiers home.
I saw kids put their coloring and baking skills to work
and deliver treats with pride to those forgotten in the community.
I saw one neighbor coordinate a Christmas party at an Assisted Living Home nearby.
I’ll never forget watching her kids pouring juice and serving up Christmas cookies.
Photos with giddy stories were uploaded to our Facebook Page.
My BFF Katie did this PRECIOUS VIDEO
(and brainstormed every bit of this with me).
This is NOT the only idea in the world like this. I didn’t invent random acts of kindness. There are neat people like you on the same brain wave. My favorite is founder of The Birthday Project that inspired me last year. My focus was super creative ideas that were super easy yet super memorable for the whole family.
I did not invent serving and giving – so many of us focus on OTHERS in a self-centered culture. I want you to know they aren’t too young and you are capable and so are they. One day or 25 days – you can light up the heart of someone or many.
I am learning that my kids GET IT
when they experience goodness through fun.
No lectures, no stern talks – let’s just LIVE IT OUT.
Bring faith to life in the context of every day life.
Let’s be creative. Let’s talk through it even when you don’t want to do it.
(FACT: There will be times in the month – your kids will be SELFISH and say NO!)

The unofficial Light ‘Em Up 2012 No Mom Guilt Pledge:
1. I am a mom with mouths to feed, etc. – this isn’t the #1 priority
2. I have other Christmas traditions that are good and worthy
3. If I don’t implement this, I am still a great mom
4. If I try this only on one day, I am still a great mom
5. If I see a mom that goes nuts with this – I can celebrate her and not condemn myself
6. I do not have to plan every detail – I can leave room for what might just happen if our hearts are open to the needs around us.
7. No matter my budget or ounce of craftiness – I am open to see how this might work – my family, our way
And, then you realize. It’s the purpose of life.
And we have all year.
And our whole lives.
Love one another.
